CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Yarrow sighed and picked up the laundry basket. She walked to the servants’ quarters where she would leave the now dried clothes in the ironing room for tomorrow’s work.

She was glad for the repetitive work. It was boring, but easy to do even with her distracted mind, and it took her thoughts away from Hasden’s fate. After the event of the previous night, she hadn’t seen him again. She had overheard the witch hunters talking about a group of them who had been dispatched to some secret destination in the middle of the night, and Yarrow guessed Hasden was one of them because he and Ven were nowhere to be found. She had hoped he had left a note for her near the fishpond on the second floor, but she had been disappointed.

“Your name is Yarrow, isn’t it?”

Yarrow jumped. Lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t noticed one of the apprentices standing in a dark corner of the corridor. This was strange because students and apprentices had nothing to do in the servants’ quarters. From his tunic with silver bands on the sleeves, she could tell he was a second-year apprentice, which meant that he was probably a year older than she was. She wasn’t completely surprised that she knew her name. Most of the apprentices came from wealthy families, and they didn’t waste their time learning the servants’ names, but they were willing to make an exception for pretty maids.

Yarrow curtsied and maintained a neutral expression. “It is, my lord.”

His friendly smile widened. “Good. I saw you working in the library a few times. Would you mind helping with some cleaning?”

She wasn’t expecting that. “Cleaning, my lord?”

His smile stretched in embarrassment while he scratched his head, leaving tufts of brown hair springing in different directions. “I was attempting a new spell with some of my fellow apprentices. You know, we’re learning magic conversion, and we thought of using our knowledge for an innocent prank. We wanted to turn a pile of books into dung. Unfortunately, the spell worked too well.”

“I see,” Yarrow said. “I can do it now, but you really don’t need to help me. It’s my job after all. Where’s the spot that needs cleaning?”

“Well.” The embarrassed smile was back on his face. “The reason I offered to help is because we did our experiment on the fifth floor. I know most servants cannot go there.”

She studied him. He didn’t look dangerous. There was something soft about him, and he looked genuinely embarrassed to make such a request. But this could still be an excuse to take her to an isolated place after dark. Yarrow wasn’t scared of him. She was probably more dangerous than he was, with her ability to summon fire, even if he didn’t know that, but she was in enough trouble already and was reluctant to take any more risks.

“My lord, the servants are not allowed on the upper floors after dark.”

“I can let us in.” The apprentice lowered his voice. “I have
